Day 2 of Mekele Trip
After an adventurous day of hiking and exploring on day one, we were recharged and ready to dive into more of Tigray’s hidden treasures. Day two began with fresh excitement as we set out to visit our first destination of the day: the breathtaking Mariam Korkor Church.
Nestled high in the mountains, Mariam Kokor Church is renowned not just for its spiritual significance but also for its stunning location. The journey to reach the church involves a challenging yet exhilarating hike, with steep paths that wind through the rugged landscape. As we ascended, the views became more and more spectacular, making every step worth the effort.
When we finally reached Mariam Kokor, we were greeted by the awe-inspiring sight of the church carved directly into the rock face. The serene and ancient atmosphere of the church, combined with its incredible architecture, left us speechless. Inside, the walls are adorned with centuries-old frescoes, depicting religious scenes and stories that have been preserved through generations.
The sense of history and spirituality that fills Mariam Kokor is palpable, making it a truly unforgettable experience. As we stood there, surrounded by the beauty of both nature and faith, we felt deeply connected to the rich cultural and religious heritage of Tigray.
Just besides Mariam Korkor is Daniel korkor church. Daniel Korkor Church offers a different yet complementary experience to its neighbor, Mariam Kokor. The hike to Daniel Korkor is challenging, involving steep climbs and narrow ledges that test your resolve. But as with all the rock-hewn churches in Tigray, the journey itself is part of the spiritual experience.
After our visit to Daniel Korkor Church, our tour guide invited us to his home, where we were treated to a warm and hearty meal. This experience was more than just a meal—it was a wonderful glimpse into the local culture and hospitality.
As we gathered around the table, our guide’s family welcomed us with open arms. The meal was delicious, filled with traditional Tigrayan dishes that were both comforting and flavorful. Sharing this meal with them was a highlight of the day, as it allowed us to connect on a personal level and experience the genuine warmth of the people.
While there, I picked up a few words of Tigrinya, the local language, and even got hands-on with some traditional cooking. I had the chance to help prepare bunna (Ethiopian coffee) and bake injera, the staple flatbread of Ethiopia. Learning these skills was not only fun but also gave me a deeper appreciation for the culture and the care that goes into preparing these everyday essentials.
This visit wasn’t just about seeing the sights—it was about truly immersing ourselves in the local way of life, even if just for a short time. The kindness and generosity we experienced made this day unforgettable.
